Vinyl and Aluminum Fence Installation in Waterloo
Vinyl and aluminum cost more at the start and then ask nothing of you. Whether that is worth it comes down mostly to how long you plan to stay.
These two materials get grouped together as the low-maintenance choices, but they do opposite jobs. Vinyl is privacy: solid panels replacing what a board fence does. Aluminum is ornamental: you see through it, it marks a boundary without enclosing the view, and it is a very common pool enclosure and front-garden material.
Vinyl
It does not rot, grey, or need staining, which is the entire argument for it. Two caveats are worth hearing before you buy. Quality varies widely and thinner panels get brittle in cold — relevant here, where a snowblower throwing ice at a panel in February is a normal event. And vinyl is rigid: it will not rake to follow a slope the way chain link does, so on uneven ground it has to step, and that stepping needs designing rather than discovering. On the rolling ground out toward Laurelwood and Vista Hills that is a real planning question.
Aluminum
Powder-coated, usually black, and it will not rust the way wrought iron does. It is a strong pool enclosure material: it clears the 1.52 metre requirement easily, correct picket spacing makes it hard to climb, and it does not block the view of the pool from the house — a safety point as much as an aesthetic one, since being able to see the water matters. Unlike vinyl it racks to follow a grade, so it handles slopes well. It gives no privacy at all, which is not a flaw but is worth being clear about.
The ground has not changed
A low-maintenance fence still has posts, and those posts still have to deal with Waterloo soil — depth below frost on clay, proper bearing in moraine sand. A vinyl panel forced out of square by a heaved post does not quietly recover the way a wooden fence can be persuaded to. What you are buying out of is the staining, not the foundation.
Choosing
Privacy with no upkeep: vinyl. Open boundary, pool enclosure, or a front fence within the 0.9 metre limit that does not block the house: aluminum. Moving within a few years, or fencing a long run: a well-built treated wood fence is usually still better value, and we will say so.

Does vinyl crack in the cold here?
Cheaper grades can, particularly on impact when cold. Better grades are formulated for this climate and hold up. This is a case where material grade genuinely matters rather than being an upsell.
Can aluminum be a pool enclosure in Waterloo?
