Chain link is what you use when the job is containment over a distance. In black vinyl it reads as a shadow rather than a fence, which is why it has quietly become the default on residential back lines.

What separates a good install from a cheap one
- Terminal posts. Corners, ends and gate posts take the tension of the entire run. Undersizing them is where cheap chain link fails, and it shows as a line that bows within two summers.
- Actual tension. Mesh gets stretched, not hung. An untensioned fence looks fine on handover day and wavy by August.
- Bearing in granular soil. On the moraine, terminal posts in sand need their footing sized for the pull they are taking. This is the specific place a Waterloo chain link fence goes wrong when it is installed to a generic spec.
- The bottom. If a dog is the reason for the fence, the gap under it is the whole job — a bottom tension wire and following the grade rather than running level over a dip.
Following the ground
One real advantage over panel fencing: chain link can be raked continuously to follow a slope, so there is no stepped top line and no triangular gaps underneath.
